Violin Exam Pack

STEVE BINGHAM Violin

Steve Bingham studied violin and chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music with Emanuel Hurwitz, Sidney Griller and the Amadeus Quartet. Whilst there he formed the Bingham String Quartet which he still leads today. The Quartet have a varied discography including both contemporary and classical works and have toured worldwide. Steve is also known for his eclectic solo recitals featuring acoustic and electric violin with live looping. He has recorded four solo albums including The Persistence of Vision, which features multi-tracked arrangements of Michael Nyman alongside Bach’s D minor Partita. Steve is joint CEO of the online music resource PartPlay, and Editor for the UK branch of the European String Teachers Association.

ADRIAN SUTCLIFFE Piano

Adrian Sutcliffe studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Philip Jenkins, where he was awarded the Frances Earle Scholarship for piano playing. He has performed at hundreds of venues throughout the UK, including the South Bank, Royal Albert Hall, St John’s Smith Square and St David’s Hall, and abroad from Eastern Europe to New Zealand. He has played in West End Shows such as The Lion King, in many performances at the Royal Opera House, London, and with various ensembles such as Endymion at the BBC Proms. His regular trio, Classic Rhythm, has released three CDs and his own works have been featured on BBC and Classic FM radio, whilst as an ABRSM examiner and trainer he has travelled extensively worldwide.

Viola Exam Pack

KARIN NORLÉN Viola

Born in Sweden and raised in the Middle East and Africa, Karin Norlén moved to the UK in 2003 to study the viola with Rivka Golani at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She now enjoys a busy career as a viola player, freelancing regularly with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as well as other orchestras in London and abroad. As a founder member of the Little Venice Ensemble, she has recorded for Stone Records and collaborated with many notable chamber musicians. Presently she is working on a trio project with flautist Wissam Boustany and pianist Aleksander Szram. Alongside her playing, Karin is a visual artist and has exhibited her work in the UK and Sweden.

GAVIN ROBERTS Piano

Gavin Roberts has performed at Wigmore Hall, the Barbican Hall and the Royal Festival Hall, and is Artistic Director of the recital series Song in the City, for whom he has devised more than 100 recital programmes. He has appeared at Oundle International Festival, Dartington International Festival, The Ludlow Weekend of English Song, and The Oxford Lieder Festival, as well as on numerous BBC Radio broadcasts and CD recordings. He studied at the Guildhall School, where he is now a professor, and is Organist and Director of Music at St Marylebone Parish Church.

Cello Exam Pack

GEMMA ROSEFIELD Cello

Gemma Rosefield made her debut recording for Hyperion in 2011 with the Complete Works for Cello and Orchestra of Sir Charles Stanford with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Manze. She is cellist of Ensemble 360 and of the Leonore Piano Trio, with whom she has made several recordings, also for Hyperion. Recent and future highlights include Edward Gregson’s Cello Concerto at the Presteigne Festival, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the Estonian National Orchestra and Vello Pähn, Elgar’s Cello Concerto at the Royal Festival Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Christopher Warren-Green, ‘Concello’ by Maciej Zieliński in Kraków with Sinfonietta Crokovia, and recitals throughout the UK. Gemma plays on a cello made in Naples in 1704 by Alessandro Gagliano.

TIM HORTON Piano

Tim Horton is one of the country’s leading chamber pianists. He is a founder member of Ensemble 360 and the Leonore Piano Trio, and has performed at major venues throughout the UK and Europe. He plays regularly at the Aldeburgh, Plush, North Norfolk, Elverum, and Bath festivals. He also appears frequently on BBC Radio 3. In 2016 Tim made his solo debut at Wigmore Hall and will return as soloist and chamber pianist in the coming seasons. With the Leonore Trio, Tim has made seven CDs for Hyperion and several more with Ensemble 360.

Double Bass Exam Pack

LEWIS BRAHAM Double Bass

Lewis Braham studied double bass with Tony Hougham at the Royal College of Music and now freelances with many orchestras including the English National Ballet Philharmonic, London Concert Orchestra, Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra and the Wilderness Festival Orchestra. He has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, O2 Arena, London Coliseum, Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and Cadogan Hall, and has recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Angel Studios and Metropolis Studios. In 2015, Lewis premiered Leaving St Kilda a piece composed for him by bassist and teacher David Heyes. Alongside performing, Lewis conducts string and youth orchestras and holds many teaching posts across the country including Haileybury College, Brentwood School and the Saffron Centre for Young Musicians.
